The University of North Carolina School of the Arts trains talented students from high school to graduate school for professional careers in the performing, visual and film and television arts. Students are admitted by audition or interview to the schools of: Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music. The Division of Student Affairs serves the physical, social, and emotional needs of a highly diverse student body, ages 13+, in the areas of health, wellness, counseling, transportation, orientation, residence life/housing, activities, and student development.
Within the Division of Student Affairs, Student Development provides leadership for the holistic student experience which include student engagement, residential education, and housing in addition to assisting with new student orientation by providing welcome week programming for incoming college and graduate students.
Primary Description of Work
The Assistant Dean of Student Development plays a critical leadership role in creating and maintaining a vibrant campus life experience for college and graduate students. Reporting to the Vice Provost of Student Affairs, the Assistant Dean for Student Development is responsible for overseeing and coordinating all aspects of student life for UNCSA's college and graduate student community. The position requires a deep understanding of the unique needs of college and graduate students studying at a performing arts conservatory. The Assistant Dean for Student Development provides administrative oversight, as well as develops, implements, and assesses co-curricular programming to advance student success and holistic well-being. The Assistant Dean works collaboratively with campus partners to enhance students' holistic learning development through their UNCSA experience.
This role advocates for the enrichment of college and graduate student artists' experience by promoting self-awareness, providing healthy social opportunities, identifying resources that foster student success, and presenting educational programs focused on developing skills essential to living thriving lives as global citizens.
Work Schedule and hours
Monday - Friday with occasional evenings and weekends
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
Student Development Leadership:
* Lead and guide a comprehensive student development program that supports academic, artistic, and personal development of college and graduate students.
* Foster connections between residential programing, academic and artistic coursework to enhance student development and success.
* Foster a culture that promotes belonging and community through activities like student development programming and events.
* Develop strategies to ensure that all students feel valued, supported, and represented.
* Collaborate with other UNCSA departments, faculty, staff, and external organizations to enhance the student experience.
* Coordinate and implement student leadership programming including annual leadership awards.
* Provide oversight and support for student organizations, clubs, and activities.
* Foster a culture of student leadership and involvement.
* Provide supervision and oversight of campus-wide events and activities to promote community building.

Strategic Leadership:
* Commit time, effort, and resources toward ensuring and improving processes which focus on student centric services for well-being.
* Ensure the collaboration and delivery of programs and services meet the needs of the student body, partnership with Student Affairs leadership team and other campus leaders that focus on student success.
* Lead Student Affairs in the development, planning, implementation, and evaluation of a comprehensive programming calendar that promotes holistic student development through educational, social, and culturally diverse campus events and activities working with partners across campus.
* Oversee the comprehensive assessment of Student Affairs, including developing student learning outcomes, creating evaluation tools, collecting data, and writing assessment reports utilizing CAS (Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher Education).
* Budget oversight for college activities and housing.
* Lead Student Affairs in the integration of CAS standards into the assessment processes for student affairs programs and services.
* Remain current on the latest CAS standards and guidelines relevant to various areas of student affairs, including residence life, student activities, orientation programming etc.
* Facilitate workshops, webinars, and other professional development opportunities to enhance assessment literacy and capacity within the student affairs division.
Supervision:
* Responsible for the supervision of Residential Education, Housing, and Student Development Coordinator and graduate assistants.
* Serves as part of the Division of Student Affairs leadership team.
* Participates in various Student Affairs committees related to student development and health and wellness related topics.
Other Duties:
* As assigned by the Vice Provost for Student Affairs.
* The Assistant Dean will serve in after-hours on-call rotation with Division of Student Affairs.
Minimum Qualifications
Master's degree in higher education administration, student personnel or related field and 3-5 years' experience in higher education related field.
Preferred Qualifications
10+ years of progressive experience in student affairs with extensive experience in campus programming and evaluation, on-call policies, and procedures, student advocacy with faculty and administrator, student well-being, and support.
