Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

This position will report directly to the Associate Director of The Guarantee Scholars Program. There is one undergraduate assistant & 4-5 peer mentors that make up the Guarantee Program Staff.

Job Duties and/or Responsibilities:
Working under the direct leadership and supervision of the Associate Director, the GA will be a core team member and active contributor responsible for the overall success of the Guarantee Scholars Program, with a primary focus on first-year scholar support. The GA will be an integral part of the Guarantee Scholars Program team in accomplishing the office and program missions and goals. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Advise and support scholars
    • Provide supplemental advising, career guidance, campus resource direction, financial aid information, housing information, and support in other times of need.
    • This support is primarily focused on the 1st -year cohort.
  • Programming Initiatives
    • Organize and execute welcome program, leadership retreats, end of year celebration, Annual Business Expo, Homecoming Reunion, alumni engagement, and other co-curricular events as needed, with an emphasis on programs for the first-year cohort.
    • Coordinate catering, room reservation, marketing, checking attendance, communicating/coordinating with relevant offices on campus for resources.
    • Organize engaging events for the Guarantee Mentoring Program including the mentor mixer, mentor outings, and mentor training.
    • Coordinate and collaborate on cohort specific programs and initiatives with other program staff and other university offices and departments.
  • Assessment & Evaluation
    • Evaluate scholars and stakeholders' experiences with the Guarantee Scholars Program.
  • Assist in the supervision and training of the first-year Peer Mentors
  • Other duties as assigned

Additional Terms of Employment:
  • Weekends & evening work may be required for programs outside of office hours. Dates will be provided in advance.
  • Graduate assistants are entitled to student holidays. Graduate Assistants do not accrue vacation time.
  • Graduate Assistant employment is contingent upon available funding and resources.
  • Summer work may be available depending upon business need

Stipend: 20 hours per week during the fall and spring semesters following the UNCG Graduate Assistantship Schedule for a $15,000 stipend.

Tuition Waiver/Assistance: We are unable to provide a tuition waiver.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
Additional Minimum Qualifications
  • Excellent time management skills and self-management skills.
  • Excellent verbal and writing communication skills.
  • Ability to complete work independently and with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Demonstrate a sense of initiative, energy, leadership, approachability, and maturity.
  • Preference is given to candidates that have experience working or identify with the populations that The Guarantee Scholars Program serves (first gen, low-income, underrepresented).
  • A background in program planning and student leadership development experience is preferred.
  • Admission to a graduate program at UNC Greensboro is required. Preference is given to those in the SAAHE program.
