Position Summary

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student's field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Graduate Assistant Proctor Job Description
The AAC creates diverse, innovative, and student-centered learning opportunities and personalized academic support that encourage all students to define and find success at UNCG and beyond. Through active collaboration with students, faculty, and staff, the AAC recognizes and builds upon students' strengths to cultivate learner confidence and academic self-efficacy.

The AAC includes professional staff, graduate assistants, and undergraduate students who work collaboratively to accomplish division and office goals. In this position, the Graduate Assistant will be supervised by the Assistant Director for Academic Excellence and will work primarily in the University Proctoring Lab (UPL). This position is intended to provide an invaluable educational component.

Graduate Assistant Responsibilities

  • Develop an understanding of, and competency in, UPL policies and procedures.
  • Verify student identity and complete check-in procedures.
  • Monitor UPL during testing to discourage academic dishonesty, including cycling the room every 10-15 minutes.
  • Enforce time limits and compliance with other faculty-selected examination procedures.
  • Explain UPL procedures to test takers and answer questions they may have.
  • Distribute, collect, and count examination materials.
  • Report violations and/or unusual occurrences during examinations using a standardized reporting process.
  • Notify appropriate personnel when test equipment malfunctions occur.
  • Perform general clerical support duties such as answering phones, processing correspondence, maintaining files, and distributing mail.
  • Meet weekly with the Assistant Director to discuss lab management and project updates.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Time Commitment: 20 hours/week; starting the first week of the term and ending after Final exams each semester. Specific work hours will be determined in cooperation with supervisor, based on the office needs. Evening (5-9 PM) and midday weekend work may be required.

Compensation: UPL proctors are compensated $12,000 for the academic year; total stipend will be prorated depending on the start date. The AAC does not provide tuition waivers. Stipend portioned out monthly.

Qualifications: UPL Proctors should maintain academic good standing during the course of employment, and are expected to have:

Knowledge of:
  • Basic features of computer equipment and applications
  • Customer service techniques, in person and on the telephone
  • Basic record keeping and filing procedures

Ability to:

  • Exercise judgment and discretion to maintain academic integrity
  • Follow written and oral instructions carefully
  • Give clear and concise instructions
  • Interact with others in a courteous manner while enforcing rules and procedures
  • Communicate effectively orally and in writing
  • Keep information confidential
  • Maintain accurate records
  • Count quickly and accurately
  • View student behaviors and facial expressions from 5-7' away

Training and support will be provided on specific job-related tasks and behaviors.
Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
* Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
* Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
* Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
* Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
