Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University seeks an experienced network security administrator to join the core network management team.

The successful candidate will have significant experience with firewalls, VPN systems, IDS/IPS, and related technologies, a solid foundation in network security, and a grasp of security standards such as ISO 27002 or NIST SP800-171.

The administrator will join a growing team in support of university operations and will participate in network security operations and incident management.

Remote and hybrid work options are available, but the successful candidate must be able to work on campus as required.

The Network Security Administrator provides the technical expertise to manage network firewalls, network fabric profiles, virtual private network (VPN) systems, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and other tools used to separate and control access to network resources.

The administrator plays a critical role in vulnerability management and ensures timely identification and remediation of network security issues.

This position works with IT leaders and technical staff to coordinate services, configurations, security, and upgrades to provide a high performance and secure network for the entire university.

The administrator reports to the Director of Network and System Administration and is a key member of the department and the Information Technology Services (ITS) operations and security teams as well as the division's technical staff.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
Information Technology Services (ITS) strengthens and supports the university's mission of teaching, research, and scholarly application of knowledge by providing the information technology infrastructure, software, hardware, and support to achieve the university's strategic goals.

ITS is comprised of nine departments which work with the university community to provide the information technology support and services required to realize operational excellence, integrate advanced technology, and create efficient and effective technology solutions.
Minimum Requirements
  • Master's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field with three (2) years' experience in server management and security, with primary responsibility network security roles, with primary responsibility for network security in an enterprise setting, including experience with XMC and Extreme NAC, Palo Alto firewalls, VPNs, IDS/IPS, SIEM tools, Nessus, or similar applications, or bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or a related field with three (3) years' experience in these areas.
  • Additional experience equivalent to the degree requirements is acceptable.
  • Significant technical knowledge of networks and network security.
  • Knowledge of common security standards such as ISO 27002, NIST SP 800-171, or PCI DSS.
  • Ability to create and follow complex technical policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Ability to apply in-depth technical knowledge and troubleshooting techniques to resolve issues.
  • Demonstrated strong customer service orientation, and experience in partnering with other units and fostering a team spirit within the department.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to work independently when performing tasks with minimal supervision, while maintaining appropriate levels of communication.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
  • Five (5) years of experience in network security roles using the tools listed under required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • An advanced degree and/or certification related to the duties and responsibilities of the position.
  • Experience managing Security Onion SIEM and Zeek IDS/IPS.
  • Experience with CrowdStrike EDR, Defender DLP, and PAM systems.
  • Experience with vulnerability management, incident response, forensics, and evidence handling.
  • Experience with project management principles.
  • Knowledge of FERPA, HIPAA and CJIS Security Policy requirements and controls.
  • Experience with basic scripting using languages such as PowerShell, C, Python, Perl or bash.
  • Experience with open-source management and security tools, and network scanning tools.
