The appointment is expected to be at the Assistant Professor level. An appointment at a higher rank may be considered for exceptionally qualified applicants. In particular, the Department is seeking qualified candidates who can develop a collaborative and innovative research program with strong expertise in biochemistry and more specifically in bio-sensing with applications in detecting diseases and pathogens, improving the health and well-being of society, and protecting the environment. The successful candidate is expected to involve undergraduate and graduate students in active research and contribute to the growth of the newly established PhD Program in Applied Science Technology.

All areas of specialization in experimental biochemistry and biomaterial chemistry will be considered. We are particularly interested in individuals who will establish nationally recognized research with externally funded extramural funding and direct the research activities of MS and PhD students in applied biochemistry and/or biomaterial chemistry. Potential for excellent collaborative opportunities among departmental faculty members, College-wide and University-wide faculty as well as neighboring Triad area universities, exist and are encouraged.

The hired faculty is also expected to show commitment to teaching excellence and service. She/he is expected to teach Biochemistry courses and other chemistry courses both at the graduate and undergraduate level, develop courses and curricula, direct students in research, and provide service to the University and community. Individuals with experience in inquiry-based teaching, student-centered learning, and/or in engaging students in investigative laboratory exercises are particularly encouraged to apply.

The ideal candidate will develop and maintain a vigorous research program for training undergraduate and graduate students in the field of biosensors with applications in detecting diseases, improving health and well-being, and protecting the environment. The selected candidate is expected to secure extramural funding and direct the research activities of MS and PhD students in Applied Chemistry and related areas.

Mentoring undergraduate research students is also expected as chemistry majors in the department follow a curriculum designed to provide ample opportunity for research experience. A candidate whose teaching and research efforts will promote the mission of the Chemistry Department and the strategic vision of the College of Science and Technology as well as the University is highly desired. Service to the Department, the College, and the University is also a requirement of the position. The selected faculty will have the ability and willingness to work collaboratively with faculties/colleagues in the sciences, math, and technology areas.
