UNCSA, one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina, is the first state-supported arts conservatory in the United States. Located in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, UNCSA's mission is to prepare gifted students for careers in the arts.
The School of Dance consists of two majors. We offer a ballet major (approximately 125 students) and a contemporary major (approximately 100 students). The Ballet Program trains high school students grades 9-12, and BFA college student years I-IV. The Contemporary Program trains high school grades 10-12 and BFA college years I-IV. Together, our excellent long-standing reputation is rooted in strong daily technical training, dedicated nurturing of creative ingenuity, and outstanding performance of classic and cutting-edge dance repertory.

Position Summary
The University of North Carolina School of the Arts, School of Dance is accepting applications for a full-time, Assistant Professor position in Contemporary Dance. All applications received by December 1, 2023 will be given full consideration. Notification of intent to hire will be made by April 12, 2024. Teaching responsibilities will begin Fall semester, 2024.
Description of Responsibilities and Duties
* Teaching dance technique to all levels of contemporary and ballet majors, as well as composition/ improvisation, and repertory
* Presenting students in concerts and workshops
* Assessing and advising students
* Attending School of Dance faculty meetings
* Serving on appointed committees
* Participating in recruitment and audition of new students
* Participating in School of Dance community outreach programs
* Fulfilling additional duties as assigned by the Dean
Required Qualifications
* Professionally trained dance teacher with extensive experience exploring and teaching a dance technique that would situate holistically within the current techniques being taught at our School of Dance. A minimum of five years professional teaching experience, which may include conservatory, undergraduate, high school or private studio experience. Sought dance genres include Graham, Dunham, and other world forms including hip-hop.
* Extensive experience choreographing and/or staging contemporary dance repertory.
* Extensive performance background with national and/or international professional organizations preferred.
* MFA or MA in the dance discipline, or equivalent professional qualifications, or an equivalent combination of education and professional dance experience.
* Additional teaching skills sought include one or more of the following: Composition/Improvisation, Partnering, Dance History, Musical Theater, Anatomy, Pilates or body therapies, Pedagogy, Career Preparation, Ballet technique.
Preferred Qualifications
Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
