Position Overview

Primary Purpose of Position
The Department of Journalism and Mass Communication at North Carolina A&T State University invites applications for a 9-month tenure track assistant/associate professor position. Primary responsibilities include teaching undergraduate-level courses, conducting research, student advising, student mentoring and recruitment, curriculum development and other required activities for tenure. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, engaging in accreditation procedures, program assessment, and service to the department, College, and University as needed.

The selected candidate will teach three courses each semester, advise students and engage in scholarly research that results in grants, publications, and other creative activities. The appointee also will serve on departmental, college and university committees as appropriate. The preferred candidate will be a mass media professional who has a track record of producing multimedia content on such platforms as print media, television, radio, digital and social media with experience teaching multimedia and mass communication journalism courses at the university level. Courses in the multimedia and mass media production sequence include Introduction to Multimedia Journalism, Electronic News Writing, Reporting and Producing, Script Writing, Photojournalism, Communication Practicum, Introduction to Radio and Digital Production, Introduction to Video Production, and Social Media. Additionally, the faculty member should demonstrate the ability to develop and supervise student projects that build professional competency. The department has special interest in individuals with backgrounds in sports, short or documentary film production, or data analysis and reporting.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit
The department is housed within the University's College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences. About 500 of the College's students are majors in the Journalism and Mass Communication Department, which plans to establish a graduate program. The department is accredited by the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC). The mission of the Department is to prepare students with the high-quality education necessary to succeed as professionals and critical thinkers and to become productive citizens of their communities, the nation, and the world.

The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS) enrolls more than 1,950 students and has more than 130 faculty members. CAHSS houses the Departments of Criminal Justice, English, History & Political Science, Journalism and Mass Communication, Liberal Studies, and Visual and Performing Arts. The CAHSS Dean's Office has administrative oversight/responsibility for the six academic units and affiliated programs of the College, as well as for its faculty & staff.

Minimum Requirements
A Ph.D. in journalism/communications or related discipline is required, in conjunction with professional media-related experience, strong content production skills, collegiate-level teaching and evidence of potential to develop a strong record of scholarly research productivity.
Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education
A minimum of five years of professional field experience is preferred in conjunction with a terminal degree in a media-studies degree area and some collegiate teaching experience.
