The University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) is part of the seventeen-campus University of North Carolina System and is located in Winston-Salem-a growing, dynamic, multicultural community of about 250,000 people. The four-year undergraduate program at the UNCSA culminates in the BFA or BM degree in one of five arts schools: Dance, Design & Production, Drama, Filmmaking, and Music.

Located in Winston Salem, UNCSA is a conservatory-style school and one of the 17 constituent institutions of the University of North Carolina system. The university community consists of more than 1,200 students ranging from middle school to graduate school. The school of Design & Production is one of the five collegiate level training programs (along with Drama, Dance, Music and Film). The school has 367 students, 32 full time faculty and 12 adjuncts. The Lighting Program consists of 3 full time faculty lines and typically has 36 students enrolled in the undergraduate programs. Students serve as designers and technicians on productions in Drama, Dance, Music, and Film as well as campus and outside community events.

Position Summary
UNCSA School of Design and Production is seeking a qualified, professional Lighting
Designer who will teach in their highly successful Lighting program. Key responsibilities
are teaching courses in Lighting Design, supervising all Lighting Design students in
productions and projects, and filling the role of mentor and advisor to Lighting students.

Description of Responsibilities and Duties
  • Teach courses in both Design and Technology within the Lighting Program in the School of Design and Production
  • Revise and renew courses and curriculum as needed
  • Advise students on course registration and progress in the curriculum
  • Continued professional activity within the entertainment industry
  • Active participation in shared governance of the university community through service to the program, school, and institution
  • Other duties in conjunction with other Lighting Faculty include:
    • Mentor and advise students throughout the production process
    • Manage components of the Lighting Department budget, purchasing and student payroll
    • Prepare and supervise the execution of rental contracts
    • Assist in the admissions process by interviewing students
    • Supervise and maintain Lighting inventory
    • Supervise and maintain Lighting Lab and Shop facilities
    • Advise facilities staff on Electrical and Lighting needs and operation of all performance facilities
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean of Design & Production

Required Qualifications
  • Candidates are required to have a bachelor's degree
  • Experience in the classroom and/or mentoring and supporting the development of early career entertainment lighting professionals.
  • A minimum of eight years' experience in the lighting field of the entertainment industry
  • Demonstrated Professional experience in Lighting Design in one or more fields of entertainment
  • Proficiency in Industry Standard Lighting Consoles either as a designer or as a programmer
  • Proficiency in Vectorworks 3D
Evidence of work that incorporates and supports diverse identities

Preferred Qualifications
  • A Masters of Fine Arts Degree or other terminal degree.
  • Experience in Entertainment Lighting Technology including but not limited to: ETC family of consoles and/or MA family of consoles
  • Experience with unionized labor contracts and protocols
Tenure Information UNCSA utilizes a multi-year contract system in lieu of tenure.
